Rep. Ayanna Pressley Emerges as Democratic Nominee for Massachusetts’ 7th Congressional District
Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., stands as the Democratic nominee for Massachusetts’ 7th Congressional District, unchallenged in Tuesday’s primary. Despite controversies over her personal finances, her husband, and racially charged remarks, Pressley will not contend with a Republican candidate in the November general election.
Her district extends over about three-quarters of Boston, with the Cook Political Report categorizing it as solidly Democratic. Pressley first secured her position in 2018, joining forces with other ‘Squad members’ such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich.
Though facing no contest in the primary and general election, Pressley campaigned alongside other Democrats, including state Rep. Tram Nguyen, a candidate for District 6. Nguyen, like Pressley, advocates for abolishing ICE, implementing Medicare for all, and ceasing military aid to Israel.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., speaks at a campaign rally for the statewide Massachusetts Democratic ticket, Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022, in Boston.
During the campaign, Pressley supported Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., and continued to criticize President Donald Trump and the conservative-leaning Supreme Court.
After the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, which determined the creation of a second majority-Black district as unconstitutional racial gerrymandering, Pressley labeled the Trump administration as ‘anti-Black,’ asserting it would prefer Black Americans to ‘pick cotton than pick the president, congressperson, or senator.’
Ahead of the primary, Pressley spoke at a rally for Markey. She deemed White supremacy as thriving under Trump’s leadership.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley and her husband Conan Harris joined picketing hotel workers at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel on September 2, 2024, in Boston, Massachusetts.
Pressley’s comments on ousting Trump emphasized that White supremacy persists beyond the presidency, associating MAGA with the Confederacy.
Introducing a bill in April targeting eviction relief, Pressley described evictions as ‘an act of violence.’ Critics highlighted her 2024 financial disclosure, revealing that she and her husband reported $8 million in assets from four rental properties.
In July, her husband, Conan Harris, drew attention when his partner company secured a $2 billion state contract to build a courthouse. John Barros, a partner in CoJo Real Estate, quit due to ethical concerns over the contract awarding process.
Competing bidders are challenging the process, suing with Barros’ departure cited as evidence of impropriety. Pressley is not linked to any misconduct in the suit.
