Recent findings from an AP-NORC poll reveal that Republican support for President Donald Trump regarding his handling of the economy has diminished. Currently, about 60% of Republicans approve of Trump’s economic management, a decrease from 80% in February. The poll coincides with rising gasoline prices as the U.S. and Iran grapple with a continuing conflict. Despite the economic concerns, Trump’s influence over the GOP remains strong, showcased by the victory of his chosen candidate over Trump critic, Rep. Thomas Massie, in a recent primary election.
Ariel Gutierrez, a 55-year-old Republican from Wisconsin, mentioned that he is assisting his teenage children with gas costs due to price spikes. He expressed that the ongoing issues in Iran have intensified the strain on household expenses, particularly in leisure activities, directly attributing it to Trump’s policies.
However, Trump’s popularity outside his base remains limited. Most Americans disfavor his strategies concerning Iran and foreign diplomacy. His overall approval rating in the poll is 37%, showing a slight increase from 33% in April. Nearly all Democrats and 70% of independents disapprove of his performance as president.
Economic Challenges
Only about 33% of U.S. adults are satisfied with Trump’s handling of the economy, a figure consistent with previous polls but slightly lower than the early days of his second term, where approval was 40%. The economy remains a challenging area for Trump, struggling to meet voter expectations despite his economic promises. His second-term approval from Republicans has dropped to 63% from 79% just before the Iran conflict began.
Richard Baumgartner, 77, a Republican from Las Vegas, considers the economic impact of the war necessary but believes these price increases will be temporary. He feels the issues will resolve once the conflict is addressed.
Strength in Immigration Policy
While economic promises have faced challenges, Trump’s tough stance on immigration stays a significant strength. Nearly half of U.S. adults, around 45%, support his immigration policies, a rise from earlier in the year. Within the GOP, over 80% approve.
Brenda Theiss, an independent voter from Alabama, credits Trump for taking a firm approach to illegal immigration compared to past Democratic presidents. She supports his method of border control, deeming it a crucial achievement.
Recently, the Trump administration has opted for more measured immigration enforcement, stepping back from earlier aggressive tactics.
Low Approval on Iran and Foreign Policy
Trump’s management of the war with Iran and foreign policy garners low approval, with just about 33% backing his approach to these issues. Two-thirds of Republicans approve of his Iran strategy, though younger Republicans show more disapproval.
Amanda Wylie, a Republican-leaning independent from Georgia, voices concerns over resource allocation in Iran, questioning the benefits for Americans amidst rising domestic costs.
The AP-NORC poll conducted between May 14 and 18 surveyed 1,117 adults. The margin of error for the poll is approximately 3.8 percentage points.
