Rescuers Find Glimmer of Hope Amid Venezuelan Earthquake Tragedy
Rescuers gathered around a newborn clothed only in a diaper and wrapped in a striped blanket. This video presented a moment of hope for families with loved ones still unaccounted for after Venezuela’s severe earthquakes last week. The video, released by The Associated Press, depicted 18-day-old Juan David and his mother, Dayana Patino, being rescued from rubble following a grueling 32-hour ordeal in La Guaira, a northern coastal region.
Amid the wreckage, a voice in Spanish encouraged a smiling Patino, “You are tough, Mami, you are tough,” while she remained trapped. The contrast between baby Juan David’s rescue and his mother’s trapped situation was captured by Andreina Quintero.
In an interview from her hospital bed in Caracas on Sunday with BBC News, Patino recounted washing dishes in her eighth-floor apartment when the earthquakes struck. “I don’t know how I didn’t let go of my baby because I was flying,” she remembered, describing being thrown against furniture. She credited her determination to protect her baby as the reason for her survival. “As long as he was alive, I was going to be alive,” she expressed. Both mother and baby are receiving medical care following their rescue, as reported by Andreina Quintero of AP.
The twin earthquakes hit on Wednesday, causing widespread devastation across Venezuela. At least 1,719 people lost their lives, and tens of thousands remain missing. As of Tuesday, hope for finding more survivors is diminishing. On Monday, the United Nations reached an agreement with Venezuelan authorities to secure 10,000 body bags, anticipating a higher death toll. Though an official count of the missing people is pending, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher noted a terrifyingly plausible initial estimate of 50,000 unaccounted for.
According to UN reports, over 5,000 individuals sustained injuries, with 12,000 others displaced. On Monday, Venezuela’s interim President, Delcy Rodríguez, affirmed the ongoing “efforts to rescue survivors,” expressing emotion and hope for families and citizens. International teams have joined the search efforts in recent days, despite the crucial 72-hour window for rescuing those trapped having passed.
