Retired Police Chief and Deputies Intervene in Midair Disturbance on United Flight
Retired Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara experienced a crisis at 35,000 feet when a routine United Airlines flight became chaotic. O’Hara, flying with his wife from Newark to Fort Lauderdale, saw flight attendants attempt to calm a disruptive passenger for nearly 45 minutes before stepping in with two off-duty Bergen County deputies to assist.
As O’Hara described to Fox News Digital, the passenger berated flight attendants, attempted to leave his seat, and behaved erratically. His agitation grew after being denied more alcohol, leading to threats and a physical confrontation. Two nearby passengers helped restrain the man with plastic flex cuffs, allowing the flight to land safely.
“About like for the last 45 minutes of the flight… all the flight attendants came over, and they were incredible,” said O’Hara. “Incredibly professional, just trying to talk to this guy to de-escalate things.”
The passenger was later identified and addressed by local law enforcement upon landing in Fort Lauderdale. A United Airlines statement confirmed the incident, expressing gratitude for the crew and passengers’ efforts to maintain safety among the 174 passengers and six crew members aboard.
O’Hara noted that verbal abuse towards flight attendants was unacceptable and praised their professionalism. With 25 years in law enforcement, including a term as Minneapolis police chief, he highlighted the potential dangers of violence in the confined space of an aircraft.
His wife, a Newark Police Department lieutenant, expressed pride in her husband for intervening when necessary, emphasizing leadership beyond his official role. O’Hara reflected on the importance of taking action to prevent harm, especially as the 25th anniversary of September 11 approached.
He suggested airlines provide restraints and training for handling violent situations on board. As of Thursday, the passenger’s identity and potential charges remained undisclosed. Authorities continue their investigation into the incident, seeking further comment from relevant agencies.
