The trailer for Lionsgate’s ‘Power Ballad’ introduces viewers to a captivating music-filled journey. Starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas and directed by John Carney, this film follows Rick Power, played by Rudd, an American wedding singer navigating life in Ireland.
The Plot
Rick was once the frontman of a rock band but changed his path after marrying an Irish woman and starting a family. His group, The Bride and Groove, now performs at weddings. During one of their gigs, they encounter Danny Wilson, portrayed by Nick Jonas, a former boy band member attempting to revive his career.
Rick and Danny share their musical struggles, leading to an impromptu jam session. Danny, impressed by Rick’s song ‘How to Write a Song Without You,’ adds it to his list of tracks. Back in LA, Danny shares his music with his manager, Mac, only to learn that his music lacks the expected hits. He faces pressure to produce something successful.
The Conflict
Weeks later, Rick hears ‘How to Write a Song Without You’ at a mall, now Danny’s new hit. This leads to a conflict as Rick seeks acknowledgment for his contribution. This quest disrupts his personal and professional life, developing into a musical face-off.
Performances and Production
Rudd and Jonas deliver strong performances. Beth Fallon adds charm as Rick’s daughter, Aja. John Carney, known for films like ‘Once’ and ‘Sing Street,’ co-writes original songs for the film. ‘Power Ballad’ may not match Carney’s past works but remains engaging.
The final act may wander, yet Carney effectively concludes the film, drawing applause from the audience.
The Verdict
‘Power Ballad’ provides laughs and music, making use of Rudd and Jonas’s talents. Audiences leave entertained.
‘Power Ballad’ is rated R for language and drug use, with a runtime of 1 hour and 38 minutes. It is currently showing in theaters.
