Former NBA player Royce White is considering legal action against the WNBA after Commissioner Cathy Engelbert informed Congress that he and Enes Kanter Freedom are not eligible to play because they are men. White insists the league must clarify its eligibility standards, particularly how it defines men and women.
“We plan to explore every legal avenue possible to hold the WNBA and NBA community to their stated standards and values,” White stated.
White announced his intention to declare for the 2027 WNBA draft alongside Freedom, identifying as women to seek inclusion. However, the league’s agreement specifies that only women can play in the WNBA, without detailing the role of gender identity or sex assigned at birth.
Engelbert’s direct response, influenced by inquiries from Rep. Marlin Stutzman and other Republican lawmakers, did not define “women” or clarify the criteria excluding White and Freedom.
White maintains that these definitions are crucial, demanding that both Engelbert and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver address the matter. He believes that the lack of clarity detracts from the integrity and enjoyment of women’s basketball.
Despite his legal challenges, White remains an avid supporter of women’s basketball, expressing admiration for the progress female athletes have made. He recalls learning from local female players during his upbringing.
White is also keeping a close watch on the WNBA Finals, considering attending several games, although he has withheld specifics due to security concerns.
