During a recent episode of ‘Don’t @ Me w/ Dan Dakich’, former NBA player Royce White shared insights on Enes Kanter Freedom’s ejection from a WNBA game. Freedom, who confronted Chicago Sky guard Natasha Cloud at a recent match, was removed following their verbal exchange.
White, who like Freedom, has declared for the 2027 WNBA Draft, aims to challenge the league’s eligibility policies. White commented on the incident involving Freedom during the Indiana Fever’s victory over the Sky. The event, occurring in the third quarter, saw Cloud engage with Freedom, leading to his removal.
Questioned about Freedom’s confrontation with Cloud, White suggested the WNBA might impose sanctions. He remarked, “They’ll claim Freedom instigated a conflict with a player. Spectators must not cross the established line with players.” White speculated on potential penalties, including suspension or a ban, likening Freedom’s situation to previous incidents of spectator misconduct.
Afterward, Freedom offered his perspective to Fox News Digital. He described celebrating a play by Sophie Cunningham, which led to Cloud confronting him. Freedom asserted his intention was not romantic towards Cunningham and emphasized protecting women and his support for women’s sports.
The incident highlights ongoing debates regarding the WNBA’s eligibility rules. Both Freedom and White challenge these standards, especially concerning gender definitions and inclusivity. Freedom declared for the 2027 WNBA Draft following backlash against Cunningham who stated that women’s sports should remain exclusive to women.
The WNBA’s current collective bargaining agreement specifies that ‘only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.’ However, it does not publicly clarify what defines ‘women’ or outline eligibility criteria for transgender athletes.
