In his address at the United Nations General Assembly, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Europe of hindering efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. Following a summer marked by intense fighting, Russian and Ukrainian attacks have increased, with fatalities reported on both sides. Recently, Russian assaults resulted in the deaths of four individuals throughout Ukraine, as Kyiv intensified its targeting of Russian oil refineries and industrial sites using long-range drones.
Attempts by the U.S. to establish a lasting ceasefire and peace agreement have not succeeded. President Trump expressed his hope that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin to reach a settlement. Lavrov charged Europe with actively obstructing talks supported by the U.S. government during a heated speech at the General Assembly. He insisted that Moscow’s goals would be realized, threats to Russian security would be removed, and peace would eventually be restored.
Before delivering his speech, Lavrov met with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, marking the first such high-level meeting since the conflict began. The discussion occurred amidst escalating tensions between Berlin and Moscow, exacerbated by Germany’s accusations of Russia attempting a drone attack on Leipzig airport. Both nations subsequently ordered the closure of each other’s consulates.
“Russia’s war targets the lives of millions of innocent people, the existence of the Ukrainian state and culture, and the European peace order,” Wadephul asserted, calling on Russia to engage in negotiations to end the hostilities.
Former President Trump remarked on his dialogue with Zelenskyy at the U.N. Assembly, stating his desire for a resolution between Zelenskyy and Putin. He anticipated a deal could be achieved soon, possibly before the coming winter. Zelenskyy revealed optimism regarding the White House’s ability to help cease Russia’s invasion, yet cautioned against Moscow’s intensifying aggressions. He urged the international community to respond decisively to prevent further escalation.
