Russia and North Korea have opened their first road bridge across the shared border, enhancing the connection between the two nations. The bridge spans the Tumen River and measures 1 kilometer in length, featuring two lanes capable of handling up to 300 vehicles daily.
The bridge connects the North Korean city of Rason with the Russian city of Khasan, improving infrastructure between the countries. Both Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song participated in the simultaneous inauguration ceremony via video link.
Prime Minister Mishustin expressed confidence in the bridge’s ability to bolster trade, economic, technological, scientific, and cultural cooperation between Russia and North Korea. The initiative reflects a strategic interest in strengthening ties between the nations.
The bridge’s completion marks a significant milestone, as noted by Premier Pak, adding momentum to the bilateral exchanges. Since February 2024, North Korea has been receiving Russian tourists, following the gradual relaxation of pandemic-related restrictions.
North Korean media, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), emphasized the bridge’s role in facilitating tourism, human exchange, and commodity circulation. This infrastructure development aligns with ongoing cooperation, including North Korea’s supply of ammunition and troops to assist Russia in its conflict in Ukraine. Russia, in turn, provides economic and military support to North Korea.
Prior to this new road connection, transportation between the countries was primarily serviced by a railway bridge and air routes. The decision to construct an automobile bridge was made in 2024, and construction began last year, highlighting the evolving partnership between Russia and North Korea.
