Ryan Rolison, a 29-year-old left-handed pitcher, entered the major leagues with significant promise. Drafted in the first round by the Colorado Rockies in 2018, his potential was clear. However, his performance with the Rockies proved challenging, as he ended his rookie season with a 7.02 ERA across 31 games.
This year marked a turning point for Rolison. Joining the Chicago Cubs, Rolison capitalized on a mid-April promotion. By early September, his stats boasted a 2.89 ERA with an impressive 146 ERA+, tallied over 52 appearances. Reflecting on his progress, Rolison stated, “Playing for the Cubs and making a significant impact in their bullpen is a dream realized.” He fondly recalled his game-closing moment against the Brewers, an achievement he deemed unlikely just a year prior.
Manager Craig Counsell lauded Rolison’s progress, noting that Cubs’ pitching coaches saw potential in him during spring training. He credited Rolison’s improved health and eagerness to adapt as key factors in his current success. Counsell commented, “He’s a talented pitcher poised to refine his skills, and our team had the right solutions for him.”

After being claimed off waivers from the White Sox in January, the Cubs had a strategic plan for Rolison. This required his full cooperation and willingness to change. Reviewing his lackluster 2025 performance, Rolison was committed to reinventing himself, affirming, “Results reveal a lot, and last year’s were poor.”
Rolison credits his recent achievements to three components. Firstly, the Cubs encouraged him to pitch with confidence. Secondly, he focused his efforts on targeting specific zones. Lastly, he refined his array of pitches, introducing a sinker and sweeper. His sinker has been particularly effective against left-handed hitters, offering a varied movement to combat right-handers.
Rolison acknowledged that he could further dominate right-handed batters, saying, “I believe there’s more potential to explore.” His increased participation in high-pressure scenarios, thanks to the trust placed in him by Counsell, has reinforced his confidence.
Rolison expressed excitement about the fervent atmosphere of Wrigley Field games, especially during potential playoff matchups. The Cubs’ focus remains on securing a top wild-card position over the coming weeks, with Rolison’s contributions being vital to achieving that target.
Looking back on his childhood dreams of postseason play, Rolison remarked, “Experiencing October baseball is something every player imagines. Fans have shown outstanding support, and the playoffs would only elevate that experience.”
