Sally Yates to Lead Investigation on Cornell’s Handling of Rape Allegations
Former U.S. Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates has been appointed to conduct an independent investigation into Cornell University’s handling of a student’s rape allegations. Yates, known for her extensive legal experience, will lead a review to evaluate the university’s procedures and responses to such cases. This move follows widespread outrage after a former student accused the school of mishandling her complaint of being drugged and gang raped in 2024.
Identified as Jane Doe in her civil lawsuit, the woman detailed how the university failed in addressing her allegations promptly. Yates, a partner at King & Spalding who served under President Obama, was chosen by the Cornell University Board of Trustees’ Special Committee. Her task includes assessing the university’s policies on preventing and responding to sexual harassment and assault.
Anne Meinig Smalling, chair of the special committee, emphasized Yates’ qualifications, saying, “Sally Yates brings extraordinary experience, independence, and judgment to this work.” The inquiry seeks to understand Cornell’s handling of the Jane Doe case and aims to improve the institution’s approach to sexual misconduct.
Doe’s lawsuit, filed in September, alleges she was assaulted by seven men at the Chi Phi fraternity house. The accused have denied any wrongdoing, and no criminal charges have been filed. The lawsuit also names Cornell as a defendant, questioning the university’s investigative processes.
While Cornell claims its investigations resulted in suspensions and expulsions, student protests highlight dissatisfaction with the university’s actions. Concurrently, New York Governor Kathy Hochul tasked Attorney General Letitia James with leading a criminal investigation into the rape allegations, due to criticism of the campus police and the local prosecutor’s handling of the case.
This case has sparked renewed discussions about consent and sexual assault on college campuses, emphasizing the importance of thorough and sensitive handling of such serious allegations.
