The San Antonio Spurs experienced a challenging moment during Game 4 of the NBA Finals. Victor Wembanyama, a prominent NBA star, was struck by an egg reportedly thrown by New York Knicks fans as the Spurs returned to their team hotel.
Videos circulating on social media captured the incident, showing at least one egg targeting Wembanyama while security guided him into a hotel in New York City. This occurrence adds to recent notable incidents involving Knicks fans.
Following the Spurs’ victory in Game 3, tension escalated outside the arena. Social media clips seemed to depict Knicks fans confronting Spurs supporters physically, with some Spurs fans having their jerseys torn during these encounters. Wembanyama criticized the behavior, stating, “My thoughts, of course, [are] that we can’t forget it’s a game. We’re just playing a game out there. I am all for passion, but [with] the respect of each other. It’s unacceptable.”
Mike Greenberg, an ESPN host, echoed these sentiments after Game 4. He criticized the actions of those targeting Wembanyama and Spurs fans, calling them self-disgracing. Greenberg remarked, “If you’re throwing eggs at Victor Wembanyama and beating up people… you’re disgracing yourself and everyone who knows you.”
“We live in a world now where somehow things don’t go without saying anymore,” Greenberg added.
In a related incident, several Knicks fans were arrested following the Spurs’ 115-111 Game 3 victory. Brawls erupted near a watch party in Midtown Manhattan, resulting in 21 arrests. Among the charges were disorderly conduct, assault on officers, weapon possession, and menacing. Thirteen individuals charged with disorderly conduct were later released.
The Knicks are in the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999, aiming for their first championship win since 1973. The series returns to San Antonio for Game 5, with Game 6 set to be in New York if needed.
