Sean Penn will direct a new film on a policeman involved in the January 6 Capitol riot. Warner Bros. announced the project. Following his acclaimed role in ‘One Battle After Another,’ Penn will take on this directorial role using his own script.
Bradley Cooper may star in the film, though his role is not confirmed yet. Penn and Warner Bros. have not disclosed details about the film’s protagonist but said it is based on real events.
Penn attended the 2022 hearings of the House Select Committee, which looked into the Capitol riot. He was seen with Metropolitan Police officers Michael Fanone and Daniel Hodges, both responders during the riot. Fanone’s testimony shared his experience of being assaulted, including being beaten and tased, resulting in a heart attack. Hodges also recounted his challenging ordeal.
At the hearings, Penn noted his presence there as an observer to see if justice would prevail. The film will explore ‘an unexpected friendship,’ with production slated to begin in mid-2027.
The announcement follows the U.S. Justice Department’s decision not to contest Paramount Skydance’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. With this $111 billion deal, finalized in February, Warner Bros. will come under the leadership of David Ellison, CEO of Paramount. Ellison and his father, Larry Ellison, maintain influential connections with former President Donald Trump. David Ellison recently appeared at a UFC event held at the White House.
‘One Battle After Another’ secured the best picture award at the Oscars in March. During this time, Penn, who won his third Oscar for his role as Col. Steven J. Lockjaw, chose to visit Ukraine rather than attend the ceremony.
