Lane Kiffin is facing difficulties with the SEC as the league considers a new rule. This rule would prevent former NFL players from competing in the SEC. Kiffin, now at LSU, has two players who could be affected: Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris.
Both players received a temporary restraining order allowing them to return to college after being released by NFL teams. Following their release, the SEC might prohibit their participation, impacting Kiffin’s plans.
An SEC athletic director expressed strong opposition to LSU playing these athletes. “If LSU plays either player, the Tigers should be disqualified from the SEC season or face a $1 million fine,” said the AD, according to Pete Nakos at On3.
“Individuals who leave college athletics, sign professional contracts, and compete professionally should not return to college competition,” stated the SEC. “This ensures competitive equity and opportunities for both high school and current athletes.”
Kiffin expressed frustration during an appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show.” He criticized the handling of court orders that allow players back into college sports. Kiffin feels conferences can’t selectively adhere to court decisions.
“All court orders have been followed,” Kiffin commented. He highlighted the inconsistency in deciding which court orders to follow. This situation, Kiffin argues, risks blurring lines between college and professional sports and poses fairness concerns.
