Sen. Marsha Blackburn Wins Republican Gubernatorial Nomination in Tennessee

Senator Marsha Blackburn has secured the Republican nomination for governor of Tennessee, defeating Representative John Rose. This victory comes without an endorsement from former President Donald Trump, as reported by NBC News.

Blackburn, aged 74, made history by becoming the first woman to represent Tennessee in the Senate, a position she has held since 2018 after serving in the House since 2003. If she wins the gubernatorial race, she will become the state’s first female governor. The general election is expected to favor Blackburn in the predominantly Republican state. She aims to succeed Governor Bill Lee, who is term-limited and stepping down. On the Democratic side, Jerri Green from the Memphis City Council secured the nomination.

Known for her conservative positions on issues like abortion and transgender rights, Blackburn has also been vocal in her criticism of China’s influence. Although Trump did not endorse her or Rose, both candidates invoked his name during their campaigns. The Tennessee Freedom Fund, a group supporting Blackburn, invested significantly to associate her with Trump, showcasing advertisements that highlight Trump’s positive remarks about her.

During a rally in Washington, Trump expressed his reluctance about Blackburn running for governor, stating, “I begged her: ‘Marsha, don’t. We don’t want to lose you in the Senate.'” Despite this, he refrained from endorsing her due to his relationship with Rose. According to the Nashville Banner, Trump communicated in a conversation aboard Air Force One that he would not endorse Blackburn, owing to his links with Rose. Rose, representing Tennessee’s 6th District, is a former state agriculture commissioner who also portrayed himself as an ally of Trump.

This race stands out as a Republican contest without Trump’s endorsement. In previous situations, Trump has backed multiple candidates, such as in South Carolina, where he endorsed both the Attorney General Alan Wilson and Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette.

Rose contributed nearly $13 million from his own funds to support his gubernatorial campaign.

Blackburn’s candidacy is part of a broader trend of senators pursuing gubernatorial roles this election season. Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville won his party’s nomination in Alabama, while Democratic Senator Michael Bennet lost in Colorado. Senator Amy Klobuchar of the Democratic Party is set to compete for Minnesota’s gubernatorial seat next week.
