The Senate confirmed Todd Blanche as the new attorney general early Saturday morning. This solidifies the command of President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney over the Justice Department. The Republican-led Senate voted 50-49, making Blanche the second attorney general confirmed since Trump returned to the White House.
Blanche, who had been leading the department in an acting capacity, expressed gratitude on social media. He stated that he was “deeply honored by the trust and confidence President Trump has placed in me.” His confirmation could allow him to pursue Trump’s agenda with more vigor.
Contentious Confirmation Process
The confirmation process was marked by serious divisions. Concerns arose from both Republicans and Democrats regarding Blanche’s close association with Trump. The vote was narrowly passed, opposed by Republican Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, along with every Democrat.
One of the main issues was the settlement of Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS. Blanche promised to abandon Trump’s suggested $1.8 billion compensation fund for his allies, which was enough to secure the crucial vote from Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy. Cassidy argued that no other nominee could manage the department better under Trump’s leadership.
Support and Opposition
Opposition focused on Blanche’s loyalty to Trump, with some fearing the erosion of the Justice Department’s independence. Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin stressed the importance of an impartial attorney general. He warned against endorsing a leader perceived as too closely aligned with Trump’s interests.
Blanche entered the Justice Department last year as deputy attorney general under Pam Bondi. He was involved in controversial matters, including the release of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. Democrats criticized him for reshuffling the department and prioritizing loyalty to Trump.
Former Prosecutor’s Background
Blanche’s supporters highlight his experience as a federal prosecutor and his efforts against crime and illegal activities. Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley praised his leadership, asserting Blanche is fit for the role.
Nonetheless, doubts remain about whether Blanche can deliver on Trump’s demands more effectively than his predecessor. Some initiatives under his leadership, such as indicting former FBI Director James Comey, have faced legal challenges and accusations of misleading judges.
