Senate Judiciary Committee Advances Todd Blanche Nomination

The Senate Judiciary Committee moved forward with Todd Blanche’s nomination, sending it to the full Senate. This decision aligns with most Republican committee members, though GOP Sen. Susan Collins has declared her opposition. Critiques originated from progressive Democrats, such as Sen. Cory Booker, who questioned Blanche’s past record.

Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania stated on Wednesday he would oppose Blanche’s confirmation as attorney general. During an appearance on Jon Stewart’s podcast, Fetterman discussed the Democrats’ inadequate use of the filibuster to block Trump’s Cabinet picks, noting his refusal to back Blanche for this significant role.

“I voted against many of Trump’s nominees,” Fetterman asserted. “Regarding Blanche, I cannot support him. There are some I believe in, but not all meet the criteria I seek,” he told Stewart.

Fetterman has previously shown support for several of Trump’s Cabinet choices. Yet, he was the sole Democrat endorsing Pam Bondi for attorney general and played a pivotal role in advancing Markwayne Mullin as Homeland Security secretary, casting another unique Democratic vote in his favor.

Sen. John Fetterman making clear distinctions during Senate votes has impacted appointments. A March 2026 vote saw him alongside former Sen. Markwayne Mullin, showcasing bipartisan cooperation.

Despite his past approvals, Fetterman’s support seems absent for Blanche, paralleling Sen. Susan Collins. Collins cited decisions made by Blanche as reasons for her opposition, which she voiced on Tuesday.

Collins had endorsed Blanche’s earlier role as assistant attorney general. Two Republican senators, Bill Cassidy and Lisa Murkowski, remain undecided. Conversely, Sens. John Cornyn and Thom Tillis switched to support Blanche after reforms.

On a 12-10 party-line vote, the committee endorsed Blanche’s nomination for the full Senate. Input from the White House, the DOJ, and Fetterman was not available at this time.
