Senator Fetterman’s Surprising GOP Convention Appearance
Democratic Senator John Fetterman made an unexpected appearance at the Republican midterm convention on Wednesday. He expressed his willingness to collaborate with President Donald Trump on Pennsylvania steel. Fetterman introduced Republican Senator Dave McCormick in a prerecorded video.
Newsweek National Political Correspondent Alex Rouhandeh attended the event. He observed that Fetterman received significant applause from the Pennsylvania delegation as his video concluded.
“Yes, I’m a Democrat. Why am I here talking to you today? Because, well, I’m a common-sense Democrat,” Fetterman stated.
Fetterman, who has garnered praise from Republicans, has been increasingly isolated from his party. There is speculation about his potential party switch, yet he emphasizes his commitment to the Democratic Party.
“I’m always going to stand with America. I’m always going to reject the extremes and socialism and that anti-American way of life,” he asserted.
In the video, Fetterman stood before Western Pennsylvania’s Mon Valley Works steel mill, pledging to work with McCormick and Trump. His aim is to support the steel industry in the Steel Valley.
Despite partisan differences, Fetterman praised McCormick as a “great friend.” Following this, McCormick applauded Fetterman, appreciating his “friendship” and “courage.” House Speaker Mike Johnson also commended Fetterman’s appearance, describing him as an example of common sense.
Pennsylvania Republicans at the convention acknowledged Fetterman’s approach. Guy Ciarrochi, a Chester County delegate, noted Fetterman and McCormick’s ability to maintain civility despite disagreements.
Ciarrochi expressed that Fetterman doesn’t need to switch parties for approval, stating, “For the long-term health of the country, it’s important that the two parties find a way to work together.” He noted Fetterman would be welcomed into the GOP but proposed a “common-sense coalition of old-fashioned Democrats and new Republicans.”
Delegate Amber Martin described Fetterman’s presence as “spectacular” and necessary for the nation. While open to him joining the GOP, she acknowledged his “old-school Democrat” foundation.
Joyce Haas, an alternate delegate, believes Fetterman benefits both parties. She stated he is beneficial, regardless of party affiliation.
Fetterman has connected with McCormick and distanced himself from party lines on high-profile issues. He has shown a readiness to work with Trump since his return to the White House. This includes meeting Trump at Mar-a-Lago before the inauguration and commending him on issues like steel.
