Republican Senator Jerry Moran from Kansas has expressed his concerns to President Donald Trump’s administration after the president suggested banning Canada’s Bombardier from selling aircraft in the U.S. unless manufacturing takes place within the country.
On Monday, Moran stated on X that he communicated with the administration to emphasize Bombardier’s crucial role in Kansas. He highlighted the importance of its Wichita operations for Kansas workers involved with Bombardier and its supply chain.
Moran remarked, “I will continue working to ensure Bombardier’s manufacturing operations not only stay in Kansas but also expand, creating American jobs. Kansas hosts a hardworking, skilled workforce, and I continue to invite aircraft and defense manufacturing leaders to operate here in the Air Capital of the World.”
The president’s threat followed closely before Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of U.S. goods were enacted on Tuesday. Trump’s administration imposed 50 percent tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian imports and has focused criticism on Canada after trade discussions collapsed in August. Trump posted on Truth Social, “NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES! Their products aren’t good enough!”
In response, Bombardier issued a statement on its website highlighting its significant contributions to the U.S. aerospace industry, providing “tens of thousands of jobs across the United States.” While not directly addressing Trump’s threat, the statement emphasized that Bombardier’s aircraft incorporate American-made components from engines to avionics and other systems sourced from prominent American companies.
Bombardier further detailed that its American workforce spans across Kansas, Texas, Arizona, Florida, Connecticut, Illinois, Delaware, California, Washington D.C., New Jersey, and over 20 states in total. The company collaborates with around 2,800 American suppliers in 47 states, investing over $2.5 billion with these suppliers each year.
The statement concluded, “Bombardier values its strong partnership with American companies and its U.S. employees. Our plan is to continue to invest in our people, our customers, and the communities where we operate nationwide.”
