Tarik Skubal is at the heart of a major conversation in Major League Baseball. Having spent his entire career with the Detroit Tigers, he has emerged as a top pitcher over four seasons. Due to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, he earned below-market salaries. Now, as he approaches free agency, he has the chance to secure a significant contract.
Despite the Tigers’ playoff appearance in 2025 and their attempts to remain competitive in 2026, a series of setbacks placed them under .500 as July approached. The Tigers faced a dilemma: retain Skubal and risk losing him for a draft pick or trade him for prospects and future control. They chose the latter, trading him to the Los Angeles Dodgers, sparking controversy.
This decision has cast Skubal in a negative light among baseball fans. He mirrors sentiments from players like Bryce Harper and Manny Machado, arguing that the Dodgers’ willingness to prioritize winning over profit isn’t harmful to the sport. Some assume Skubal’s career will continue in Los Angeles, misunderstanding midseason trades for free agent rentals.
“I would love to play my whole career in Detroit,” Skubal expressed in an interview. He remains open to negotiations post-season, hoping they include the Tigers. In departing Detroit, he shared how emotional farewells to teammates affected him.
Skubal believed the Tigers had a promising chance at a championship following impactful signings, naming Framber Valdez, Kenley Jansen, and others. “This season wasn’t supposed to unfold this way,” he lamented, confident that their offseason moves positioned them as World Series contenders.
The Dodgers now have opportunities to extend Skubal’s contract. They hold exclusive rights to negotiate with him post-World Series, but Skubal’s value on the open market makes a return to Detroit plausible if the Tigers invest in reacquiring him.
The Dodgers’ history supports this view. They’ve let past midseason players like Yu Darvish and Manny Machado explore free agency. Outside Tommy Edman, they haven’t retained midseason trade additions.
Skubal’s agent, Scott Boras, is known for navigating the open market, which could lead him to another team. Meanwhile, after trading Skubal, the Tigers are experiencing a resurgence. With key wins and competitive standings, they’re close to a playoff spot.
If the Tigers make a playoff push and reacquire Skubal, criticism of the Dodgers for “ruining baseball” might persist. Skubal is aware of the situation, potentially serving as a rental for the Dodgers’ championship aspirations.
