Reporter Chad Pergram highlights a notable shift in the Democratic Party. Socialist candidate Melat Kiros ousted Rep. Diana DeGette, who had served 14 terms in Denver. Kiros’ win marks the 27th progressive victory this cycle. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance both issued sharp warnings following the event.
The far-left movement is expanding its reach across the U.S. Progressive candidates have recently claimed wins in both New York City and Colorado. This momentum is set to influence upcoming primaries in Missouri, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Florida.
Melat Kiros, backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), overcame 15-term Rep. Diana DeGette in a deep blue district in Denver. Following this, former Rep. Cori Bush from Missouri expressed on social media that her region would aim for a similar outcome on August 4th.
“Only socialism can solve decades of capitalist mismanagement in the US. Our newly elected leaders will fight for the working class — not for crumbs,”proclaimed the DSA.
In Missouri, Cori Bush is campaigning to reclaim her seat in St. Louis’ 1st Congressional District. Bush, known as a nurse, pastor, and Black Lives Matter activist, initially defeated Democratic Rep. Lacy Clay in 2020 but lost renomination to Wesley Bell, backed by significant outside funds.
The progressive agenda is set to impact Michigan, with primaries aligning with Missouri’s. Abdul El-Sayed, a health director and former gubernatorial candidate, is eyeing the seat of retiring Sen. Gary Peters. El-Sayed received endorsements from figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, emphasizing a movement driven by the people.
Wisconsin will hold its primaries shortly after, with state Rep. Francesca Hong gaining popularity as a candidate to replace Gov. Tony Evers. Hong, aligned with DSA, embraced recent progressive victories, attempting to replicate them locally.
Florida gets its turn next, with Oliver Larkin, supported by DSA, challenging Rep. Jared Moskowitz in a district covering parts of Miami-Dade and Broward.
Melat Kiros, who faced job loss after authoring an essay about Israel, gained further support from Justice Democrats. This group supports individuals like Ocasio-Cortez, known for challenging long-standing incumbents.
State Rep. Manny Rutinel also achieved a significant victory in Colorado’s 8th Congressional District, defeating a more moderate opponent. His win sets up a contest against Republican Rep. Gabe Evans as the GOP works to maintain its House majority.
Democratic strategist Joe Caiazzo noted the significant progress of the progressive movement. Wins by far-left candidates capture media attention, posing challenges to Republicans aiming to retain control in the House and Senate. President Trump and Vice President Vance have both vocalized anxieties about a growing ‘communist’ threat within the Democratic ranks.
