Sophie Cunningham: A Controversial Figure in Women’s Sports

Sophie Cunningham has become a highly debated figure in the world of sports. Her stance on keeping women’s sports female-only has sparked significant reactions from supporters and critics. This became evident during a Friday evening game in Portland where the Fever faced the Portland Fire, a new WNBA expansion team.

Cunningham’s advocacy for female-only spaces in sports has led to rallies in her support. The first took place in Seattle, with attendees facing moderate resistance from trans rights advocates. The event gained attention after Celeste Keaton, co-owner of the Seattle Storm, verbally confronted two girls wearing XX-XY Athletics T-shirts, which expressed gratitude for Cunningham’s stance. Marco Esquivel, a Nordstrom store director, also berated the girls and their supporters. Nordstrom has not issued a statement about the incident.

The “With Love Is Truth” series began on July 28, 2026. It was organized by Women Are Real, Amy E. Sousa (Known Heretic), and independent journalist Brandi Kruse. A rally was held with local supporters, including high school athletes, outside Climate Pledge Arena before the game between Indiana Fever and Seattle Storm.

On Friday in Portland, Sousa addressed a crowd in solidarity with Sophie Cunningham. She was joined by public figures like former Olympian Inga Thompson and attorney Kara Dansky. They stood with others in support of maintaining female-only sports spaces. Opposition came from trans rights advocates, creating a tense environment.

Cunningham’s position was described by Sousa as a “voice of reason” in a contentious debate. However, a woman wearing a “Protect Trans Kids” shirt interrupted Sousa’s speech, displaying a commitment to both peaceful and active resistance for trans children. Counter-protesters clashed verbally with Cunningham supporters, highlighting deep divides.

Some trans supporters dismissed inquiries, with one insisting biological men can change chromosomes to become women. Other protesters accused young children of being indoctrinated to support Cunningham. Despite varied interactions, the disputes remained intense.

Inside the arena, Cunningham faced boos at each appearance on the court. The opposing team, the Portland Fire, showed their stance by waving pride flags. The atmosphere was charged with contention, as Fire fans outwardly displayed their beliefs.

Cunningham commented before the game, asserting her right to express herself, despite disagreements. The next rally will occur in Minnesota, corresponding with the Fever’s game against the Minnesota Lynx.
