Trump’s Presence at South Carolina’s Senate Campaign Rally
On August 21, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump stood alongside Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina and Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming during a rally in support of Republican Senate candidate Darline Graham in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This gathering was part of Trump’s effort to boost Graham’s campaign as she prepares for a runoff election against Ralph Norman.
The purpose of Trump’s visit to South Carolina was to energize GOP voters ahead of the runoff election to replace the late Senator Lindsey Graham. The senator passed away after a heart condition, creating a vacancy that has led to a heated race.
The Significance of the Runoff Election
On Tuesday, South Carolina Republican voters will head back to the polls to select a candidate to replace Lindsey Graham on the November ballot. After failing to secure an outright win in the Republican special primary earlier this month, Graham’s sister, Darline Graham, and Congressman Ralph Norman will compete in the runoff.
Said Trump: “I’m doing this to honor Lindsey. That’s why I’m here. So, Darline, we got to win that race.”
The outcome of this race will test President Trump’s sway in the state. Trump encouraged Graham to run and has invested in her campaign both personally and financially. His super PAC, MAGA Inc., has contributed over $827,000 in support of Graham.
The Influence of Trump’s Endorsement
Trump’s backing of Graham is notable, given his selective financial support in several close Republican primaries this cycle. His involvement hasn’t always guaranteed victory, as evidenced by defeats in Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, Wyoming, and even South Carolina during the gubernatorial primary in June.
Ray Saldi, a voter in South Carolina, chose Graham due to her connection with his admired late brother, Lindsey Graham. Saldi expressed a preference for the Graham legacy in contrast to Trump’s endorsement being less decisive in his decision.
The Dynamic Campaign Race
In the August 11 special election, Graham took around 33% of the votes, whereas Norman captured about 25%. Without a decisive win and despite her lack of political history, Graham’s campaign borrows strength from her brother’s legacy. Lindsey Graham’s established network and reputation in state politics continue to bolster her campaign.
Graham has expressed a desire to carry forward her brother’s work and maintain the resources and support he brought to South Carolina. However, her limited experience showed during a debate hosted by NewsMax, where she admitted to not being well-informed on national security matters, drawing criticism from the audience. Lindsey Graham was known for his firm stance on foreign policy.
Norman’s Experience and Struggle
Conversely, Ralph Norman offers his experience as a five-term Congressman as a contrast. Previously, Norman ran for governor, an effort that concluded third place. Now, he leverages his established political background as a crucial element of his Senate campaign.
Norman appreciates his underdog position and believes in his supporters’ enthusiasm, which he states remains strong. While aligned politically with Trump, Norman backed Nikki Haley’s presidential bid against Trump. Haley reciprocated Norman’s support, bringing significant financial backing to his campaign.
Anti-Establishment Sentiments
Across various elections, many voters have shown a preference for anti-establishment candidates. Graham uses her outsider status as a candidate without extensive political career experience to her benefit.
The winner of the runoff will oppose the Democratic candidate, Annie Andrews, a pediatrician, in the November elections. The seat is predicted to remain a Republican stronghold. The primary campaign has illustrated the political dynamics and voter preferences influencing the Republican establishment.
