The South Carolina Supreme Court has overturned the murder convictions of Alex Murdaugh, vacating his life sentences. The court cited clerk Becky Hill’s improper influence on the jury. Hill allegedly sought a guilty verdict to enhance her book sales by making prejudicial remarks to jurors.
Murdaugh, however, remains incarcerated, serving a 40-year federal sentence for financial crimes. Despite the overturned convictions, he will face a new trial. Hill, who is involved in a civil lawsuit with Murdaugh, resigned in 2024 after jury tampering accusations surfaced.
Photos taken after the ruling showed Hill sitting on her porch, apparently unconcerned. Hill, who resigned after pleading guilty to obstruction and misconduct related to the trial, stated during her sentencing that she was ashamed of her actions.
The state’s highest court criticized Hill’s actions as disgraceful, ruling that she denied Murdaugh a fair trial by influencing the jury. Both the prosecution and defense had expertly presented their cases, but Hill’s interference rendered those efforts futile.
Despite the upcoming retrial, Murdaugh remains behind bars. His surviving son, Richard “Buster” Murdaugh, expressed doubt about his father’s involvement in the murders of his wife and son, stating he did not believe his father would endanger his mother and brother.
Murdaugh originally called 911 after the June 7, 2021, shootings, reporting that his wife and son had been shot. At the time, his son Paul was awaiting trial for a fatal boat crash. Murdaugh was later found guilty of their murders and sentenced to life without parole, but the verdict was overturned after years of appeals.
