Tarik Skubal Defends Dodgers Against Critics
When the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired Tarik Skubal at the 2026 trade deadline, critics quickly voiced their usual concerns: the Dodgers are dominating the sport. Yet, the newly acquired ace, Skubal, has a different perspective.
In a press conference on the road, Skubal challenged critics. He emphasized that Los Angeles should not be blamed for striving to win. “Every team could trade for me,” he remarked. “I don’t sympathize with those blaming the Dodgers. They’re a winning organization.”
Skubal arrives in Los Angeles having earned back-to-back AL Cy Young Awards in 2024 and 2025. This season, he boasts a 2.79 ERA and has recorded 116 strikeouts across 16 starts. Having observed Sunday’s game from the Dodger Stadium dugout, Skubal is set to debut for the Dodgers against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Skubal’s comments address a common debate in baseball. Whenever the Dodgers sign a star player, debates about implementing a salary cap resurface. Calls for a salary cap are not the solution to alleged competitive balance issues. Outside of sports, consumers don’t demand companies reduce spending or pay workers less to ensure fairness. In baseball, however, fans often align with owners, advocating for limits on player earnings.
“A salary cap doesn’t magically turn struggling franchises into smart ones,” Skubal stated. “Instead, it offers ownership a way to avoid building genuine contenders.”
The Dodgers did not have a hidden agenda in acquiring Skubal. Every team had equal opportunities. The Dodgers excelled in drafting, developing players, and maintaining a focus on winning. Instead of penalizing success, the league should follow their lead. Fans should demand more from their front offices, not seek to handicap those who prioritize success.
