The United States team faced a learning moment following their defeat by Europe in the Solheim Cup. The weekend showed that not all experiences need to be shared on social media.
After the morning foursomes on day two, the U.S. trailed 7-5. Competing in the Netherlands, the Americans could not lose more ground during the afternoon fourball matches. Although the team lost the first fourball match, they triumphed in the final three. A key victory came from Jennifer Kupcho and Lindy Duncan, who overcame a 2-down deficit against Carlota Ciganda and Celine Boutier.
Jennifer Kupcho celebrated a significant moment, sinking a 90-foot putt to extend the match on the 17th hole. She followed with another birdie on the 18th, earning a full point and bringing the score to 8-8 before the Sunday singles.
The victory led to celebrations. Photos of American captain Angela Stanford boarding the team bus with a case of beer were shared on the team’s official X account. Although casual drinks are harmless, they received attention from the European team.
On Sunday, Team Europe celebrated their win after claiming seven of the 12 singles matches to reclaim the Solheim Cup. Their celebrations included a playful jab at the Americans. Dame Laura Davies, a renowned European golfer, distributed drinks on the bus and led a chant, “We drink on Sunday, they drink on Saturday.”
Stanford defended her team’s celebration, stating it was a moment to cherish. “The worst thing I could have done is go in there and be like, ‘OK, y’all, come off this high,’” Stanford said. “You don’t want to take away from those moments. We’re never going to see anything like that again.”
With a 15-13 victory, Europe has claimed or retained the Solheim Cup four times in the last five contests. The last American win on European soil was in 2015 in Germany.
