Teen Detained After Deadly Seattle Food Festival Shooting
A 15-year-old has been ordered to remain in juvenile detention following a gunfight at a Seattle food festival that resulted in three fatalities and at least four injuries. The incident took place at the Seattle Center Armory during the crowded Bite of Seattle festival.

Prosecutors stated that the gunfight involved the 15-year-old, a 19-year-old man who died at the scene, and possibly a third individual. Authorities suspect the shooting may be linked to gang activity. Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson announced that police are investigating the number of people involved. She mentioned that one person is in custody, and the 19-year-old who died has been identified.
Police are examining video footage, analyzing bullet casings, and pursuing additional leads to clarify the events. Prosecutors requested that the 15-year-old be held in detention, and Judge Tanya Thorp approved the request. Hong Tran, the teen’s public defender, did not comment on the case.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
The 15-year-old faces suspicion of three counts of first-degree assault and one count of second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm. This is his first criminal case encounter in the county. Casey McNerthney, spokesperson for the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, confirmed this.
Gary Gatewood Jr., a youth coordinator at Southwest Youth and Family Services in Seattle, acknowledged knowing the teen but did not provide further details. Prosecutors are set to receive initial investigation details by Wednesday and will decide on formal charges soon after.
Shooting Chronology
Police found that the 15-year-old and the 19-year-old were associates. Nicole Powell, Assistant Chief of Investigations for the Seattle Police Department, stated that two groups exchanged gunfire, suggesting possible gang involvement. A police officer less than 100 feet away witnessed the 15-year-old firing a handgun into the crowd.
The teen was apprehended shortly after the shooting. The detained 19-year-old succumbed to a gunshot wound. A third suspect is being sought by the police, according to Mayor Wilson.
Casualties and Witnesses
The King County medical examiner identified the deceased as Junior Cee Niko Semo, 19, Ashley Whitehead, 56, and Carlos Israel Sanchez Villalba, 44. They died from multiple gunshot wounds, with four others wounded and reported stable. Court documents indicated that one victim directionally linked to the teen’s alleged firing included a 2-year-old child and a person with a bicycle.
Witnesses mistook the gunfire for firecrackers, causing panic. Social media videos captured festival attendees fleeing the scene. Hana Kim, a food vendor at the festival, described the chaos as people took cover under her family’s tent, with some searching for loved ones amid the commotion.
Kim assisted her parents in evacuating attendees while leaving behind phones, wallets, and cash boxes. A woman later called to thank Kim’s family for their protection. Kim revealed the emotional impact of the situation, emphasizing the shock she and others still feel.
