Russian President Vladimir Putin has countered Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s assertion that Russian airspace is compromised due to increasing drone strikes, labeling it “state terrorism.” On Tuesday, Zelensky remarked, “Despite the lack of proper information from Russian authorities, Russian airspace is effectively closing. The war initiated by Russia is closing the skies. Currently, Russian skies are dominated by drones—not civilian aviation.” Although many commercial airlines have avoided Russian airspace since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, some nations like China, India, and the United Arab Emirates continue to fly over the country.
“Ukraine does not pose a threat to civilian aviation directly,” Zelensky explained, as reported by the BBC. However, he cautioned that drones will be prevalent in Russian skies, necessitating attention.”
Putin dismissed Zelensky’s comments as “state terrorism,” vowed continued attacks on Ukraine, and criticized calls for negotiations, saying, “They want us to resume talks and request personal meetings. We don’t negotiate with terrorists,” during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit reported by The Associated Press.
The incident is reminiscent of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17’s downing over Ukraine in 2014, with 298 fatalities. Investigations accuse Russia but Moscow consistently denies involvement. In the previous year, the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization held Russia accountable for the flight’s downing. A Dutch-led probe indicated the aircraft was downed from Ukrainian territory under pro-Moscow separatists, using a Russian-delivered Buk missile system.
Germany accused Russia of attempting an attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport using an explosive-laden drone. Consequently, Germany announced the closure of a Russian consulate and other countermeasures against Moscow. The drone, discovered near a Ukrainian aircraft on August 4, was safely neutralized. Western authorities claim Moscow orchestrates sabotage and disruption across Europe to destabilize support for Ukraine and EU nations.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova dismissed Germany’s allegations as “far-fetched,” a pretext to escalate tensions. Additionally, Putin contended Germany’s leaders exploit the incident to deflect from internal problems and voter dissatisfaction regarding “countering an aggressive Russia.”
CIA Director John Ratcliffe secretly visited Moscow amid strained US-Russian relations concerning the Ukraine conflict. Reports suggest the visit partly aimed to deliver warnings to Putin. Ratcliffe urged Russia against NATO aggression and to lessen backing for Iran, as reported by Politico. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Ratcliffe met intelligence officials, not Putin, although the president was briefed on discussions.
In an interview, President Donald Trump revealed he dispatched Ratcliffe with hopes of resolving Russia’s war with Ukraine, stating, “Something may emerge from this endeavor. We’re striving to end that war,” on Glenn Beck’s conservative radio show.
