On Friday, British prosecutors charged a 28-year-old man, already detained for the murder of a conservative politician, with terrorism offences. The Crown Prosecution Service identified the accused as Joshua Kerry from South Yorkshire. He faces one count of preparing terrorist acts, including threats against Nigel Farage MP, the leader of Reform UK.
Kerry has been in government custody since late July for the alleged murder of Ann Widdecombe, a former politician with Reform UK and the Conservative Party. Prosecutors allege that on July 8, Kerry entered Widdecombe’s Devon home, assaulted her with a hammer, and stole her wallet. The attack lasted only two minutes, they say.
Authorities link the latest charges to incidents occurring between May 31 and July 8. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans of Counterterrorism Policing highlighted the extensive investigative work leading to these charges. She praised the efforts of detectives, analysts, and forensic experts involved in the investigation.
UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood called the charges “extremely concerning,” expressing sympathies to the Farage family on the platform X. She underscored the implications of attacks on public figures, stressing their impact on the entire political system.
The Jo Cox Foundation, honoring the Labour MP murdered in 2016, stated, “No one in public life should have to fear for their safety. Violence and intimidation threaten democracy and must be addressed.”
Meanwhile, Kerry is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on the following Wednesday.
In a separate development on Friday, two Iranian men faced terrorism-related charges. Salam Ahmadyan, aged 36, and Rahman Salehi, aged 34, are accused of planning to target Manchester’s Jewish community. The charges involve “engaging in conduct in preparation for terrorist acts,” as per the 2006 Terrorism Act.
The men allegedly communicated with an overseas third-party, potentially located in Iran. Evans reiterated the gravity of these charges but assured the public of no ongoing threats related to this matter.
As Ahmadyan and Salehi are set to appear in court on Saturday, Evans noted the allegations coincide with the Jewish High Holy Days and follow last year’s attack at Heaton Park synagogue, contributing to rising anti-Semitic incidents in the UK.
Tyler Speicher, an American journalist based in Slovenia, contributed to this report. With 25 years of experience, Speicher covered diverse stories for New York City news outlets, including a 20-year tenure at Fox News Channel.
