Nine Norwegian commandos skied across rugged terrain in 1943 to reach the Vemork plant in Rjukan, Norway. This plant produced ‘heavy water,’ essential for Nazi atomic weapons. During World War II, Vemork became crucial to Nazi efforts under physicist Werner Heisenberg.
The Allies sought to destroy Vemork due to its strategic importance to the Nazi nuclear ambitions. The defense of the plant intensified as the Allies’ interest grew. This dramatic race is detailed in Neal Bascomb’s book, “The Winter Fortress.” Although Michael Bay acquired filming rights, no movie has been produced yet.
The potential movie would highlight why President Donald Trump focuses on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities. Trump, like British PM Winston Churchill and US President Franklin Roosevelt, aimed to thwart despotic regimes from obtaining destructive weapons. Iran’s current regime, based on ‘Twelver’ beliefs, poses a similar challenge.
‘Twelver’ ideology, originating from the Iranian Revolution led by Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979, is critically viewed by secular and progressive circles in the West. Critics often dismiss these beliefs but they shape Iran’s leadership decisions, including nuclear aspirations.
Trump and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu target Iran’s nuclear program, including the plant at Pickaxe Mountain. Despite setbacks, Iranian extremists persist in their nuclear ambitions. The historic mission by the Allies validated the need for decisive action against nuclear threats.
The regime in Iran remains committed to its ideology, with no ‘moderate’ leadership in sight. The ongoing battle against Iran requires understanding narratives like “The Winter Fortress.” Successful Allied operations at Vemork neither ended World War II nor Nazi nuclear ambitions fully.
The courage displayed by the Norwegian commandos allowed for a victory in Europe, delaying Nazi plans. Yet, further attacks were necessary to thwart those plans. President Trump’s bold actions against Iran’s nuclear plans draw parallels to these historic efforts.
The Iranians’ nuclear knowledge remains intact and ideological convictions unaltered. Their regime, made up of uncompromising extremists, echoes the tenacity seen during World War II. America’s response to the Iranian threat should follow historical examples set by FDR and Churchill.
