Three teenagers were injured on Monday night during a large gathering at 57th Street Beach in the Hyde Park neighborhood, according to officials. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges as ‘teen trends’ emerge in prominent areas, leading to increased efforts by anti-violence workers and police during the summer.
Chicago police reported that an 18-year-old man and two 19-year-old men were standing outside at the gathering around 10 p.m. on the 1600 block of East 55th Street when they heard gunshots and were struck. An 18-year-old suffered a wound to his hand and was taken to UChicago Medicine, where he was listed in good condition. Another 19-year-old was shot in the leg and also transported to the same hospital, where he was reported in good condition. The third victim, who was wounded in the right hip, made his way to UChicago Medicine and was similarly listed in good condition, as per police reports.
Police did not confirm if the event at the beach was a ‘teen takeover’ and referred to it simply as a large gathering. No arrests had been made, and detectives were continuing their investigation.
This incident comes amid other recent news of violence, including a suspect being shot and killed and an Indiana state trooper shot on I-94, and other ongoing investigations and charges related to shootings in different areas.
