Tom Homan Defends ICE’s Use of Unmarked Vehicles Amid Controversy

Tom Homan, White House border czar, addressed criticism of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) use of unmarked vehicles. During a CBS “Face the Nation” interview, he argued their effectiveness in locating suspects. His comments came in the wake of an incident where a Houston man was fatally shot.

Homan stated that the use of unmarked vehicles should prevent suspect evasion. He suggested that compliance with law enforcement could have averted the deaths, saying, “Comply with a vehicle stop by a federal law enforcement officer.”

The exchange included Margaret Brennan challenging Homan on whether officers used emergency lights during a Houston pursuit. Brennan noted concerns from the family of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. They believed Salgado mistook the officers for robbers due to the unmarked car.

Homan insisted that unmarked vehicles include equipment for officers to identify themselves, including emergency lights. “They activate emergency lights, blue lights,” he said, but admitted he had not reviewed footage of the incident.

Brennan pressed Homan to back his claims, noting available videos lacked evidence of emergency lights and officers weren’t wearing body cameras. Homan acknowledged lacking video evidence but emphasized the need for proper light activation.

He remarked on the common use of unmarked vehicles in police departments, such as in New York City, describing their utility in tracking elusive individuals.

Homan endorsed implementing body cameras nationwide, expressing, “Body cameras let the American people know what that officer sees.” ICE has begun acquiring cameras to train personnel and plans to require recording vehicle stops.

Federal officials noted Salgado wasn’t the Houston operation’s target. ICE initially claimed self-defense after Salgado allegedly rammed a federal vehicle. Witnesses in his van disputed this account.

Less than a week later, an ICE officer in Biddeford, Maine, fatally shot a Colombian driver, also not the target. The officer fired over public safety concerns when the driver attempted escape.

In another incident, a Mexican national in Florida died under a tractor-trailer after fleeing immigration agents. Investigations into these events continue.
