The northwest region of Nigeria was struck by tragedy when a boat capsized in Sokoto state last Thursday, resulting in at least 47 fatalities. This incident occurred on a river where locals often travel for work.
The vessel was transporting more than 80 passengers to farms in Gorau town within the Goronyo local government area. Officials confirmed the fatalities, highlighting the gravity of the disaster. Abdulkadir Yusuf, who manages operations at the National Inland Waterways Authority in Sokoto, reported that the death toll had reached 47. Residents on the scene conveyed the devastating impact of the accident, with many victims being women and children.
Samaila Garba, a Sokoto resident, shared his personal loss; his 13-year-old granddaughter, Jamila Usman, was among those who perished. He observed at least 42 bodies and notes of sorrow filled the community.
‘During the rainy season, most women and children go to the farm to work,’ Garba explained.
Aminu Dan Hajiya, another resident, expressed gratitude for avoiding the tragedy himself, recognizing the widespread impact on nearly every household in the community. Community leader Usman Yusuf confirmed that over 80 individuals boarded the ill-fated vessel, with 41 buried so far.
The frequency of boat accidents in Nigeria rises during the rainy season. Safety regulation enforcement remains weak, allowing unsafe boats to operate without life jackets. Earlier this year, in January, a similar accident claimed the lives of at least 25 people in Yobe state, highlighting a persistent issue.
