Incident Overview
A horrific event unfolded as Alan Smith, 44, killed eight of his relatives, including four children, before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident occurred outside Billings, Montana, during a Sunday family dinner. Smith was reportedly asked by his parents to move out, but returned to the home and opened fire.
Brad Ireland, whose former wife and two children were among the victims, stated that Smith also set the house on fire, attempting to flee before facing law enforcement.
Police arrived at the scene and heard gunshots before flames engulfed the home. Authorities confirmed Smith’s self-inflicted wound as the cause of death. The tragedy affected four generations of a blended family, from a seven-year-old girl to a wheelchair-bound great-grandmother.
Background on Alan Smith
Described as a “hermit,” Smith was known to spend most days in his room on his computer. Ireland mentioned concerns about Smith’s behavior, but felt they were not properly addressed. Smith had attended Eastern Washington University but struggled to find employment.
His parents had recently asked him to move out, but Smith returned unexpectedly while the family gathered for a dinner they usually held on Fridays. Ireland noted that while Smith had not been violent before, he had been verbally abusive.
Victims and Their Legacy
Megan Ghekiere, Brad Ireland’s ex-wife, was killed alongside their children, Owen, 13, and Chloe, 7. Ghekiere’s stepchildren with her current husband, Landon, 15, and Charlotte, 12, also perished. Megan moved to Montana with her children after divorcing Ireland, where she met Adam Ghekiere, who was at work during the shooting.
The Ghekiere family was originally from Seattle. Megan’s parents bought a house nearby, while Evelyn Smith, Megan’s grandmother, lived in a retirement community.
Support and Community Response
Two GoFundMe campaigns raised substantial funds to support the victims’ families. A page created in memory of Landon and Charlotte collected over $60,000, and another for Adam Ghekiere surpassed $90,000. Friends and community members expressed sorrow and shared stories about the family’s lost members.
Mercer described Landon as caring and patient, excited about his upcoming driver’s license. Charlotte was noted for her humor and curiosity. Donations aim to cover funeral costs, time off work, and counseling for Adam’s unexpected losses.
Adam Ghekiere expressed grief, recalling his daughter Charlotte’s call to 911, and her affectionate exchanges with him.
