A mental health advocate, Karen Solomon, was discovered deceased, six days after her disappearance from her Massachusetts residence. She was suspected of killing her husband, Worcester Police Officer Kurt Solomon.
Karen Solomon, known for promoting awareness and improvements in police mental health, vanished following the death of her husband at their home. Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier labeled the incident as a tragic murder-suicide.
Human remains found by workers at Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital were identified as those of Karen Solomon. Although the final identification was pending, authorities were confident of her identity. A handgun was recovered near her body, and investigations are underway to trace its ownership. Chief Saucier confirmed that the weapon was not a service weapon from Worcester police.
Authorities released footage from a doorbell camera showing Karen Solomon walking shortly after the police had responded to the scene of her husband’s death.
Kurt Solomon, who had served 31 years with Worcester police, died from injuries inflicted by a sharp object. Karen Solomon was present at their residence when her husband was found dead. Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. disclosed that they intended to question her, charging her with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
The search for Karen Solomon involved a comprehensive law enforcement effort, with local, state, and federal agencies participating. Search measures included deploying drones, boats, and tracking dogs near their home and a nearby reservoir.
Karen Solomon, aged 58, co-founded First H.E.L.P., advocating for police officers’ mental health. She authored two books on first responders’ experiences and noted the limited support offered to families of officers who committed suicide during a 2020 “Dr. Phil” show appearance.
In a family statement read by Police Chief Saucier, appreciation was expressed toward law enforcement for their efforts during this time of resilience. The family described feeling heartbroken and grateful for the support received.
A wake and funeral for Kurt Solomon are organized, with the local police union president, Thomas Duffy, commemorating him as an admirable and familiar figure to the community.
