A devastating incident occurred in Peshawar, Pakistan, on Thursday, October 15, 2026, when the roof of a private school unexpectedly collapsed. This tragic event resulted in the death of at least 28 children and a female teacher, while over 50 individuals sustained injuries. Rescue teams were quick to respond, diligently searching through the debris to save those trapped beneath.
Bilal Faizi, an emergency services spokesman, confirmed reports of children trapped under the rubble soon after the collapse. Hospital spokesman Mohammad Asim reported that some of the injured were critically hurt, and all casualties involved children aged 13 or younger. In response, the hospital declared an emergency to manage the influx of wounded individuals.
Rescue efforts continued for hours, culminating in the removal of all individuals trapped in the rubble. The debris-clearing operations are ongoing. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Governor, Faisal Karim Kundi, expressed his sorrow over the tragedy. He demanded an investigation to determine the collapse’s cause and instructed that the injured receive top-notch medical care.
Mahwish Zaman, a teacher injured in the incident, spoke from her hospital bed. She described the school as a three-story structure with approximately 1,200 students ranging from nursery through fifth grade. Zaman recounted the terrifying moment when the roof collapsed during her class, resulting in her loss of consciousness.
Witnesses described how local residents were among the first to respond. Samiullah Khan, a resident, recounted helping to rescue three girls. His son was fortunate to survive, as he had left his classroom for water at the time of the collapse. The rescue operation was further supported by swift arrival of professional rescuers.
Parental anxiety gripped the area as many gathered outside the school and at Lady Reading Hospital, anxiously seeking news of their children. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse. Peshawar police chief Saeed Ahmed confirmed the arrest of the school’s owner, citing structural weaknesses as a concern.
The provincial government formed a committee to examine the cause and took immediate measures to ensure the wounded received timely medical assistance. Samar Haroon Bilour, the provincial government spokeswoman, commended rescue workers for their efficiency and assured the commitment of resources for continued rescue efforts.
Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed their sorrow and condolences to the families affected by this tragedy. They emphasized the need for a thorough investigation and enforceable safety standards for school buildings to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Building collapses are not uncommon in Pakistan, often due to insufficient construction standards and the use of subpar materials. A similar event in July led to the collapse of a roof at a tutoring center in Lahore, resulting in the deaths of four children.
