A tragic shooting outside a Ferguson, Missouri gas station claimed the life of a mother while she was with her children. Shakeela Martin, a 35-year-old mother of five, was fatally shot just before midnight on Tuesday. The incident occurred at a BP gas station located at South Florissant and Woodstock roads.
The Ferguson Police Department reported that Martin had stopped to purchase slushies for her two children, aged 9 and 6, when gunfire erupted following an altercation that started inside the store. As she walked back to her vehicle, she was tragically caught in the crossfire.
The children, though unhurt physically, witnessed the tragic event. Ferguson Police Chief Troy Doyle expressed the profound impact on the children, describing the emotional distress they are enduring.
Another victim, an adult male, was critically injured but details surrounding his involvement remain unclear. No arrests have been made yet as police continue their investigation.
The family of Martin is left grieving their loss. According to a GoFundMe page, she was in the process of moving into a new home and had taken her children for slushies to celebrate. The shooting interrupted these plans, leaving the family devastated.
Describing Martin as a devoted mother, the fundraiser page highlights that she did not have life insurance, urging donations to help cover funeral expenses and support her children’s immediate needs.
The Ferguson Police Department urges anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Contact can be made to investigators at 314-522-3100 or CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS.
