The trial for three men accused of murdering two Australian surfers and an American kicked off on Monday, two years after the incident at a Mexican surfing hotspot. The victims, Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson, aged 30 and 33, and their 30-year-old American friend Jack Carter Rhoad, were on a surfing expedition along Mexico’s Pacific coast in April 2024 when they were killed.
Authorities report that the killings were linked to a failed robbery attempt of their pickup truck, which was later located burned near their bodies. The men had been camping in a secluded beach area before the attack. Their bodies, discovered in a cliff-top shaft days after they were reported missing, exhibited gunshot wounds to their heads.
The Robinson brothers’ parents, Debra and Martin Robinson, arrived in Ensenada for the trial’s commencement. Debra Robinson, visibly emotional, faced the accused in the courtroom.
“It’s about representing our sons, being here for them. I know they want us to be here,” Martin Robinson conveyed earlier to reporters. “We want to find out what happened. We want to find out why.”
According to the prosecution, the surfers went missing on April 27, 2024, while camping in Ensenada. The attackers reportedly ambushed and shot them on April 28. Their bodies were subsequently found on May 3, 2024.
Three witnesses testified on Monday. Among them was the stepson of one accused, who provided a depiction of his stepfather’s violent nature. Testifying with his face concealed from an adjacent room, he shared that he accompanied the accused to the crime site, staying nearby as the incident occurred. “I heard a lot of noise,” he recounted, explaining his temporary escape and subsequent return after being summoned by the group. They threatened him with the same fate if he disclosed any details.
Ary Gisell Silva, the witness’s stepfather’s girlfriend, was sentenced to 20 years last year. She confessed to initiating the robbery, targeting the pickup’s tires. Silva, having initially engaged with the tourists, noticed their valuable possessions. She admitted urging her boyfriend and two other men to rob the surfers for their “good phones and good tires.”
The crime ignited deep sorrow and anger in both Australia and the U.S., prompting an extensive social media effort by the surfers’ families and friends in hoping to locate them. Callum Robinson was a professional lacrosse player in the U.S., while his brother Jake was entering the medical field as a doctor. He traveled to reconnect with his brother before his medical career in Australia. Jack Carter Rhoad’s killing disrupted his impending marriage. His fiancĂ©e shared in court, “He was my safety in the world. My life is now a nightmare.”
Baja California, known for high crime rates involving organized crime and drug trafficking, is not typically prone to affecting tourists, though instances of violence do occur. In 2015, Australian surfers Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman were also killed in northwestern Sinaloa, their bodies later incinerated.
