The Trump administration has taken action against several tech companies, including Microsoft and Adobe, prohibiting them from applying for green cards for their H-1B visa holders. This move, announced on Thursday, aims to protect American jobs.
Policy Announcement
Vice President JD Vance led the announcement, stating companies using the green card program to hire foreign workers at lower costs would lose access to the PERM program. The government is targeting firms they believe undermine American employment.
Microsoft as a Key Example
Vance highlighted Microsoft’s practices, noting substantial layoffs in the past year while continuing to pursue H-1B visas and green cards. “We want companies to prosper in America,” Vance stated, emphasizing the need for these corporations to prioritize American workers.
“Our message to Microsoft and any corporation is simple: thrive and employ American workers,” Vance remarked.
Other Companies Affected
While Microsoft was emphasized, other technology giants also faced suspensions. Secretary of Labor Kieth Sonderling confirmed the suspension of IT outsourcing firms like Cognizant, Infosys, Tata, Wipro, HCO, and Capgemini, alongside Microsoft and Adobe. He cited “multiple active federal investigations” as the reason for Adobe and Microsoft’s suspension.
This suspension means no new green card applications will be processed or accepted from these companies. Comments have been solicited from the affected organizations.
This is an ongoing story, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
