President Donald Trump criticized New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman following the newspaper’s report on his plans to attend the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks at the Pentagon, rather than Ground Zero in New York City. Trump labeled Haberman as a “fake reporter” and criticized her appearance, calling her “unattractive” and accusing her of being a “scammer” and a “stalker.”
The report suggested that Trump opted for the Pentagon event since politicians are barred from making speeches at the World Trade Center site since 2012. Trump contested this, calling it “corrupt news” and emphasized that the ceremony is focused on honoring the victims and their families.
“I never even thought of what Maggot [sic] made up, and besides, I would love not to speak, because I’m speaking all the time, and this is a day to remember the victims, and their beautiful family members.” – Donald Trump
According to the Times, Vice President JD Vance is expected to be in New York for the commemoration. Trump’s travel plans, including a trip to Ireland following the event, influenced his decision to remain near Washington.
Former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, along with Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush, are expected to attend the New York event.
Trump also hinted at a new lawsuit against Haberman and the New York Times, criticizing Haberman’s past Pulitzer Prize for reporting on the Russia investigation.
Pattern of Criticizing Female Reporters
Trump’s remarks about Haberman follow a history of targeting female journalists with personal insults. In February, Trump criticized CNN’s Kaitlan Collins during questions on the Epstein files, while in November he insulted Bloomberg’s Catherine Lucey. During his first term, Trump attacked Mika Brzezinski and Megyn Kelly, making derogatory comments about their appearance and questioning style.
