Abelardo De La Espriella, a lawyer known for criminal defense, is poised to secure a win in Colombia’s presidential election. This outcome would signify a shift towards right-wing policies in Latin America. His victory marks a triumph for his supporters, the right globally, and Donald Trump, who endorsed him.
De La Espriella has rebranded from a Miami-based lawyer to a populist figure, sporting casual attire like soccer jerseys and straw hats during his campaign. As per preliminary results, he garnered nearly 49.7% of the vote, edging out his opponent, Iván Cepeda, a leftist senator and human rights advocate, who achieved approximately 48.7%. Over 99% of votes have been counted.
This win signals a return to conservative leadership following Gustavo Petro’s presidency, Colombia’s first leftist leader. It also reflects Latin America’s broader rightward shift aligning with Trump’s second presidential term.
The 47-year-old De La Espriella conducted a dynamic campaign, utilizing dramatic elements like machine-generated flames and A.I.-generated videos featuring tigers, his mascot. He became a notable figure through repeated anti-Petro chants.
His platform addressed key issues resonating with right-wing leaders in the region. He pledged to restore security amidst crime fears, rectify perceived economic mismanagement by the left, and tackle corruption.
