Former President Donald Trump has publicly endorsed Darren Bailey for governor of Illinois, a move that complicates the Republican candidate’s efforts to distance himself from Trump, who is unpopular in the state. Trump’s support is seen as a factor in Bailey’s 2022 loss to Democrat JB Pritzker. Trump’s backing of Bailey was announced while Trump was in Ireland, combining diplomatic meetings with attending the Amgen Irish Open golf tournament.
Trump praised Bailey as a good candidate, recounting Bailey’s personal tragedy in October when his son Zachary, daughter-in-law Kelsey, and two grandchildren died in a helicopter crash in Montana. Following the crash, Trump wrote Bailey a letter urging him to fight for Illinois in honor of his family. Trump, who previously endorsed Bailey in the GOP primary, criticized Pritzker’s handling of crime, suggesting Bailey is a strong choice for governor.
In his current campaign, Bailey aims to distance himself from Trump-related issues, focusing on Illinois rather than national politics. Despite this, Bailey appreciated Trump’s endorsement, emphasizing the race centers on Pritzker’s failures. Bailey has, however, maintained connections with Trump supporters, attending the midterm Republican National Convention, dubbed “Trumpapalooza,” and being photographed in the “President’s Box” at an event in Dallas.
The Pritzker campaign highlights Bailey’s past comments supporting Trump, including calls for Trump’s tariffs and welcoming federal agents. Leah Hurwitz, Pritzker’s campaign spokeswoman, remarked the endorsement aligns with Bailey’s past admiration for Trump. Pritzker’s camp has broadcast TV ads showing Bailey’s previous support for Trump, positioning Bailey firmly with the former president’s policies.
Trump is slated to visit Illinois soon for the Presidents Cup golf tournament at Medinah Country Club, raising questions about potential campaigning for Bailey. Trump has consistently lost in Illinois across presidential elections, and his endorsement could affect Bailey’s efforts to attract Democratic and independent voters.
