Amid ongoing trade tensions with Canada, President Donald Trump announced a renaming of Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’. He claimed the renaming was in response to perceived unfair trade practices by Canada against the United States.
On Sunday, the White House supported this move by amplifying Trump’s suggestion to rebrand New Mexico as ‘New America’. Trump’s Truth Social account initially shared an image depicting the state’s name alteration, which was later reposted by the White House on its verified social media.
The symbolic name change for Lake Ontario was formalized through an executive order by Trump. This move followed several tariff disputes between the two countries. The renaming directive instructed Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to update the Geographic Names Information System. As a result, major digital map services like Google and Apple also reflected this change for users within the U.S.
Additionally, Trump had previously signed another executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America’. While geographic features such as lakes can be renamed at the federal level via executive orders, changing a state’s name is not within presidential authority. The name ‘New Mexico’ is historic, originating in the late 1500s by Spanish explorers and remaining after the region became part of the U.S. and later achieved statehood in 1912.
The move to change Lake Ontario’s name has been controversial. A poll indicated that most Americans disapprove of the renaming. The White House and New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s office did not provide comments on the renaming actions.
Amanda Macias, a journalist focusing on business, economics, and political policy, highlights how such decisions impact markets and the American workforce.
