Trump Shares Melania’s Views on His Public Appearances
President Donald Trump has disclosed several actions that first lady Melania Trump dislikes about his public appearances. During a speech to supporters in Las Vegas, Trump mentioned that Melania criticizes his signature dance moves at rallies and his habit of mimicking a weightlifter when discussing transgender athletes. Melania views these actions as not “presidential.”
“She hates it when I imitate men in women’s sports,” Trump told the crowd. “She hates it when I do ‘the weightlifter,'” he added, demonstrating the motion of lifting weights. “She said it’s not presidential. I responded, ‘Well, it may not be presidential, but I won the election in a landslide, so I don’t know.'”
This is not the first time Trump has shared Melania’s disapproval of his more theatrical onstage moments. Previously, he described her as “a very classy person” who is not fond of his dancing or impressions.
Trump’s Notable Rally Dance
Trump’s dance moves have become a hallmark of his rallies, particularly when set to the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.” However, according to Trump, Melania believes this routine does not align with a presidential image. Earlier this year, Trump said Melania questioned whether former President Franklin D. Roosevelt would have behaved similarly.
“She hates when I dance,” Trump stated during an address to Republican lawmakers in January. “She actually said, ‘Can you imagine FDR dancing?'”
In a 2023 appearance at the California Republican Party fall convention, Trump recounted a similar interaction where Melania remarked that his dancing was “not presidential.” He explained that he performs these dances because audiences encourage him by chanting, “dance, dance, dance.”
Concerns Over His Weightlifting Impression
Melania is also not fond of Trump’s gesture when speaking about transgender athletes in women’s sports. Trump mimics a weightlifter using exaggerated hand movements during these discussions. He mentioned that Melania finds this performance inappropriate.
“She hates when I do ‘the weightlifter,'” Trump repeated. In January, he recalled Melania’s plea: “‘Darling, please, the weightlifting is terrible.'” In response, Trump reminded her that he became president: “I said, ‘But I did become president.'”
He shared this exchange during a 2023 California speech, recalling Melania’s feedback on his public presentations, including comments about his on-camera appearance after an interview.
Rally Traditions Endure Despite Criticism
Despite Melania’s critiques, Trump’s dance moves and physical gestures remain central to his campaign style. Supporters often encourage these displays, shaping them into a key aspect of his political brand.
Although Melania maintains a lower public profile and rarely discusses her husband’s comments about their private conversations, Trump frequently portrays her as a source of advice about his image and presentation.
