President Donald Trump signed a significant piece of legislation on Wednesday designed to bolster federal resources for tackling child exploitation. Sponsored by Sen. Josh Hawley, this law will allocate funds for 200 new child exploitation investigators. Until now, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had only seven forensic analysts nationwide dedicated to these cases.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, Hawley expressed gratitude towards President Trump for prioritizing this crucial issue. Hawley stated that the bill represents the largest federal effort against child trafficking and emphasized the urgent need to protect vulnerable children.
The measure forms part of a larger $70 billion reconciliation package. This package earmarks $38 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and $26 billion for the Border Patrol. The legislation dedicates $108.5 million specifically for child trafficking and exploitation enforcement, marking an unprecedented federal investment in this area.
“This is the largest surge against child trafficking ever by the federal government. Time is of the essence. Let’s rescue these children.” – Sen. Josh Hawley
The legislation gained support partly through the advocacy of former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow, who participated in a Senate Judiciary Subcommittee hearing on March 3. He highlighted the alarming extent of child trafficking, noting that 338,000 unique IP addresses in the U.S. have been involved in downloading or distributing child exploitation material.
The measure aims to expand support for the Child Exploitation Investigations Unit of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). This plan includes hiring 40 new forensic analysts and 30 child exploitation investigators at HSI’s Victim Identification Laboratory. Additionally, it allows HSI to bring in 130 more specialists and establishes a training program for law enforcement at all levels to work together more efficiently on these investigations.
President Trump reiterated the importance of this bill, highlighting its role in supporting law enforcement efforts to combat child exploitation and restore order. He stated that this funding is vital for protecting America’s youth.
The legislation, derived from Hawley’s Renewed Hope Act, is seen as a critical step in addressing the widespread issue of child trafficking. With enhanced funding and collaboration, the federal government aims to improve the effectiveness of these pivotal investigations.
