Trump’s Energy Dispute with California Over Offshore Oil Production
President Donald Trump rekindled a longstanding energy conflict with California in a recent Truth Social post. The post highlighted an executive order aimed at resuming oil activities related to the Sable Pipeline and boosting offshore oil production along California’s coast.
Governor Newsom’s Stance
California Governor Gavin Newsom responded to Trump’s actions by reiterating his opposition. In March, he accused Trump of instigating a conflict to raise gas prices nationwide, intending to benefit oil industry associates. Newsom emphasized that California would resist any attempts to harm its coastal communities, environment, and substantial coastal economy worth $51 billion.
Details on Executive Action and the Sable Pipeline
Trump’s Truth Social post included a White House graphic explaining an executive order. This order directed the Department of Energy (DOE) to invoke the Defense Production Act for restarting the Sable Pipeline. Energy Secretary Chris Wright was instructed to produce 50,000 barrels of oil daily, potentially increasing California’s offshore oil output by 550 percent. The pipeline aims to generate 20 million barrels of oil equivalent annually for meeting Department of Defense (referred to as the ‘Department of War’) requirements across 50 military sites on the West Coast.
In March, the DOE commanded Sable Offshore Corp. to resume operations at the Santa Ynez Unit and Pipeline System, due to concerns over supply disruptions and national defense needs. The initiative utilizes Defense Production Act powers delegated through Trump’s amended executive order. Wright stated that this would bolster America’s oil supply and enhance a pipeline system critical to national security.
The DOE indicated that Sable’s operations could yield about 50,000 barrels per day, marking a 15 percent rise in California’s in-state oil production. This capacity might replace about 1.5 million barrels of foreign crude monthly. Trump’s decision to highlight the graphic follows significant attention from his administration on energy security amid global tensions affecting oil trade routes.
Resistance from California and Other West Coast Governors
Trump’s announcement has revived disputes with California leaders regarding offshore drilling. California Governor Gavin Newsom previously labeled the plan as ‘dead on arrival’ in the state, committing to legal challenges if necessary. The administration’s 27-32 offshore leasing proposal, including six lease sales along California’s coast, faced severe criticism from state officials and environmental advocates.
Governor Newsom, alongside Oregon and Washington’s governors, formally challenged this plan, emphasizing potential threats to coastal livelihoods, ecosystems, and communities. Legal actions are already underway, with California’s Attorney General Rob Bonta opposing federal shifts in pipeline oversight.
