President Donald Trump proposed renaming New Mexico to ‘New America’ through social media, attracting criticism from the state’s largest newspaper. The suggestion, made with an edited image of a New Mexico map, shows ‘Mexico’ crossed out and replaced by ‘America.’ A screenshot was later shared by the White House on X, followed by an AI-generated video of Trump altering a ‘Welcome to New Mexico’ sign.
Trump claimed many suggested renaming New Mexico as it is a ‘great vote-cheating state.’ However, he lacks the authority to rename a state, and the suggestion has faced strong opposition from New Mexico’s leadership.
Reactions from New Mexico’s Political Leaders
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham opposed the suggestion on Instagram, emphasizing New Mexico’s historical name. She highlighted the state’s focus on issues like free childcare and healthcare. Former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland and other Democratic lawmakers criticized Trump’s proposal on social media.
Republican gubernatorial nominee Gregg Hull also rejected the name change, citing New Mexico’s rich history and identity, which he said is ‘not up for negotiation.’
Albuquerque Journal’s Response
Journalist Ryan Boetel of the Albuquerque Journal criticized the proposal as immature and suggested ignoring such statements. He linked Trump’s actions to his frustrations with international conflicts and domestic issues, calling it an attempt to provoke a reaction from New Mexicans.
Legal and Historical Context
Legally, New Mexico’s name is protected by its constitution. The region was named Nuevo México by Spanish explorers centuries before Mexico’s modern name. Trump cannot unilaterally change the state’s name; a proposal would need to start within the state.
Other Geographical Renaming Attempts
Trump has attempted other renamings since returning to the White House. He signed an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as ‘Gulf of America,’ a move unrecognized by Mexico and internationally. Similarly, Trump ordered Lake Ontario to be renamed ‘Lake America,’ which Canada rejected. Additionally, he has suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz to ‘Trump Strait.’
