Turley Criticizes Protests at Supreme Court Justices’ Homes
Jonathan Turley, a Fox News contributor, argues that protests outside the homes of Supreme Court justices are part of a larger effort to influence the court’s decisions. These actions aim to undermine the court’s integrity. Turley highlights incidents such as an attempted attack on Justice Brett Kavanaugh and protests featuring disturbing displays at Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s residence.
Turley reflects on consistent protests involving conservative justices, including recent events at Chief Justice John Roberts’s vacation home in Maine by self-described ‘kayak-tivists.’ Demonstrators used flotillas to express dissatisfaction with his rulings.
Historically, Chief Justice Roberts faced criticism from various political figures, including President Trump, for his judicial decisions. Yet, Turley emphasizes the protests stem from anger rather than rational disagreements.
In an article, Becca Shaw Glaser encouraged Mainers to confront Roberts publicly. She criticized his judicial decisions impacting civil rights, environmental protection, and other issues.
“Should you see Chief Justice John Roberts duck into Squid Ink coffee or the Port Clyde General Store this summer, consider letting him know exactly what you think of him and his illegitimate, ultra-conservative court.”
The New York Times detailed how such protests have even involved Roberts’s family members. Turley underscores how protests against justices, predominantly conservative, disregard the judges’ efforts to maintain judicial integrity.
Turley discusses how the court continues to make unanimous or near-unanimous decisions, showing no bias toward a partisan agenda. He emphasizes that protests at justices’ homes, which he deems illegal though sometimes constitutionally debatable, undermine the justice system’s stability.
He calls for Americans to denounce such protests, despite ongoing political disagreements, in favor of respecting the judicial process.
Jonathan Turley has a distinguished academic and legal career, being well-published in constitutional law and having served as counsel in significant legal cases. His expertise extends to testifying before Senate hearings and contributing to public discourse on Supreme Court matters.
