Ty Simpson’s NFL Debut and Future Prospects with the Rams

Before Ty Simpson’s first NFL game for the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday, his father shared simple yet wise advice via text. “My dad talked to me like I was four again,” Simpson said of his father’s message. Jason, his father, encouraged him to focus on each play, enjoy the game, and expressed his love.

Simpson took the advice to heart and delivered an impressive performance in his debut game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Although the game was challenging, Simpson made the experience look effortless.

Over the game, Simpson completed 21 out of 25 passes, accumulating 190 yards over three quarters, following Stetson Bennett who opened the first quarter. His two touchdown passes and no interceptions led to a 125.0 passer rating, earning praise from Coach Sean McVay.

“It was a great day for him,” said McVay. “He maintained excellent command, and seeing him smile was rewarding.”

However, performance in the preseason often doesn’t reflect future success. NFL scouts and experts caution against overvaluation of preseason games because the true test comes in the regular season.

Yet, Simpson’s standout debut may challenge these preseason perceptions. Criticisms during the draft aimed at his arm strength and pressure handling now seem diminished. Draft experts from the NFL Network and ESPN, aside from Dan Orlovsky, questioned his potential, but the Rams’ decision to draft him in the first round appears justified, considering his promising debut.

While it’s too early to declare Simpson as the Rams’ future starting quarterback, he shows potential. The team’s faith surpasses that of TV analysts. Simpson, though not ready to replace the seasoned Matthew Stafford, who recently extended his contract, has ample growth opportunities.

Simpson’s learning curve includes seeking opportunities to improve, as highlighted by a third-down play analysis from McVay. The coach noted that despite the situation, the young quarterback could have chosen a more progressive option.

After the game, Coach McVay allowed Simpson to address the team, a significant gesture for a rookie. This experience, complemented by the ongoing competition for the backup role with Bennett, adds focus on Simpson.

Simpson, grounded by continuous support from his father, receives motivational messages, including Bible verses, bolstering his confidence. “He always sends me a Bible verse or quote, which provides comfort,” Simpson shared.
