U.S. Coast Guard Rescues Teen from Overturned Boat in Bering Sea
The U.S. Coast Guard executed a significant rescue operation this week, saving a 15-year-old boy from an overturned fishing vessel in the Bering Sea. This event occurred near St. Lawrence Island, approximately 100 miles west of Alaska’s mainland and about 40 miles from Russia’s Chukchi Peninsula. The rescue was announced on Wednesday but took place on Monday.
Struggle at Sea
The boy had been in frigid waters for nearly three days before being discovered atop the overturned boat. Tragically, he was the only survivor; his 16-year-old brother and their 39-year-old cousin did not survive. Reports indicated that the teen displayed signs of hypothermia when found.
The boy’s fishing vessel was last seen leaving Savoonga on Friday, intended to return early Sunday morning. It was later found about four miles east of St. Lawrence Island.
Rescue Operation
A mission coordinated by the Coast Guard saw the involvement of several entities, including the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center, the Alaska Air National Guard, Alaska State Troopers, and local authorities. Multiple planes and helicopters participated in the search.
The fishing vessel Northwest Explorer rescued the boy after Coast Guard aircrews dropped a life raft. Lt. Cmdr. Jonathon Resch, the pilot who spotted the boy, expressed relief and surprise at the outcome. “People don’t survive those scenarios,” he mentioned, emphasizing how unlikely survival is in such conditions.
Resch recounted how he noticed the teen’s raft by chance due to the angle of the sun.
Gratitude Expressed
“We are grateful for the incredible efforts of the motor vessel Northwest Explorer, federal, state, village first responders, and mission partners who assisted in the effort that resulted in a life saved,” said Coast Guard Arctic District commander Rear Adm. Bob Little.
The boy’s mother and other family members listened to the rescue through a radio transmission. “We all cried and jumped for joy when the captain announced on the radio, ‘We found a kid, he’s alive, he’s alive,’” a family member shared.
Video footage captured the boy in a bright yellow jacket, kneeling on the overturned skiff. Rescue crew members tossed him a line and pulled him into a rescue basket. The bodies of the two family members who died were also recovered.
Earlier this year, another rescue by the Coast Guard made headlines when a family of three was saved after nearly a week adrift in the Pacific Ocean.
